Comedian-actor Vir Das has questioned the authenticity of an Apple smartwatch bought through the online marketplace Zepto. In a post on X on Monday, Das said the watch did not appear genuine and alleged that customer support told him there was nothing they could do. He said the purchase was made in a hurry for a shoot and that they were charged Rs 50,000.
His post centred on two points: his doubt over whether the smartwatch sold to him was an original Apple product, and his claim that the response from customer support did not resolve the matter. He said the watch was bought because it was needed quickly for a shoot. His use of the phrase “Full scam” underlined the seriousness of his complaint. Das made the allegation in a strongly worded post and tagged Zepto’s official handles.
He wrote, “Okay. Am I wrong, do all apple watches look like this or is @ZeptoNow @zeptocares being shady with china copies? By the way their customer device agent on the phone said there’s nothing they could do. Full scam. We needed one quick for a shoot. They charged us 50k.”
Responding to the post, Zepto wrote, “We take such concerns seriously and have already scheduled a reverse pickup of the product, which is our standard process in such cases. This will help us investigate the issue with our brand partners. For high-value products, users receive an OTP at the time of delivery. The OTP should only be shared after checking that the package is properly sealed and in good condition.”
The statement added, “We are currently looking into this case and will take appropriate action based on our findings.”
Earlier post on flight incident
Earlier, he posted about an incident on a flight, sharing a photo of a fellow passenger resting a bare foot up near the window during meal service and scratching one foot with the other while nearby passengers were eating. He had asked users what they would do in that situation and said an aisle-seat passenger across from him tried to look away and focus on his meal.
That post had prompted a flood of reactions online. Many users criticised the passenger’s behaviour and discussed hygiene and etiquette in shared public spaces. Some said such conduct continued because people were reluctant to confront it directly, while others said they would have asked the passenger to put his feet down. The episode turned into a wider conversation on civic sense during travel.
On the work front, Das was last seen in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, which he also directed. Backed by Aamir Khan, the film featured Mithila Palkar, Mona Singh, Sharib Hashmi and Srushti Tawade.
