Prabowo opens five dams to bolster food, water security

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto on Friday inaugurated five dams across Indonesia, highlighting the projects as key investments to strengthen food security, water supplies, flood control and renewable energy development.

Speaking at the Meninting Dam in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Prabowo inaugurated the Meninting, Rukoh, Keureuto, Jlantah and Sidan dams.

The projects underscore the government’s push to expand water infrastructure supporting agriculture, raw water supplies, disaster mitigation and sustainable development.

President Prabowo thanked Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and the Public Works Ministry for overseeing years of dam construction.

He said building a nation requires long-term commitment, with major infrastructure projects taking years to complete.

Prabowo cited the Meninting Dam, whose construction began in 2019, as an example of the time, funding and resources required for strategic infrastructure.

He also acknowledged the contributions of previous administrations to completing the five dams.

The president urged relevant agencies to operate and maintain the dams professionally to ensure reliable irrigation for farmers.

“Ensure farmers receive the water they need. Farmers produce our food. Without food, there is no nation. Every rupiah of public funds must benefit the Indonesian people,” he said.

The dams are expected to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen water security and support Indonesia’s long-term sustainable development goals.
