Prabowo backs IIM, IIT campuses to boost Indonesia-India education

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed his support for the establishment of an Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) campus in Indonesia and the exploration of an Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) branch.

“In education, both Prime Minister Modi and I support the establishment of an Indian Institutes of Management campus, as well as the potential setup of an Indian Institutes of Technology branch in Indonesia,” Prabowo said, according to a Presidential Secretariat press release.

Speaking during a joint statement following a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Merdeka Palace, Prabowo noted that this support reflects both nations’ commitment to strengthening cooperation across education, research, technology, culture, and people-to-people relations.

In addition to backing the presence of IIM and IIT campuses in Indonesia, Prabowo stated that the Indonesian government also supports increasing the number of Indonesian students pursuing higher education in India.

Meanwhile, in the cultural sector, the president said Indonesia welcomes plans for the restoration and conservation of the Prambanan Temple Compounds, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Yogyakarta.

The government also welcomes the designation of 2026–2027 as the Tagore-Dewantara Year for Indonesia-India cultural and educational diplomacy.

The commemoration marks the centenary of the meeting between Indian poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore and the father of Indonesian education, Ki Hajar Dewantara.

Prabowo expressed optimism that the agreements reached by Indonesia and India would soon be translated into concrete actions.

“We are confident that these agreements can be implemented soon to deliver tangible results and benefits for the people of both nations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi said the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management Bangalore campus in Indonesia would create valuable educational opportunities for young people across Asia.

Beyond education, Modi said India and Indonesia had also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the space sector, technological development, and human resource capacity building.
