At the 14th World Peace Forum in Beijing on July 3, Hina Rabbani Khar, former Pakistani Foreign Minister, spoke about the growing scarcity of dialogue in global affairs. She expressed pride in Pakistan’s role, calling this “one of those unique moments in history” where her country made a difference.
Khar noted that dialogue and negotiations have become favors that countries no longer give. Since 1979, Iran and the U.S. had no leadership contact until Pakistan stepped in. Her explanation: Pakistan is “invested in peace, stability, and coexistence” for a region with no other option.
She also challenged double standards, pointing to a country that justifies genocidal acts and military expansion that violates international law while claiming Western values. “The broad majority of the world is saying ‘enough,'” she said.
Despite the grim reality, she sees opportunity as things have gotten so bad that false narratives can no longer hold. She concluded: “very glad that Pakistan was where it was playing the role.”
