Govt optimises 843 feed banks ahead of El Nino

Banjarbaru, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture is optimising 843 animal feed banks across 34 provinces as part of its strategy to maintain the availability of livestock feed by strengthening silage and hay reserves in preparation for El Nino.

Director-General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry, Agung Suganda, said feed banks play an important role in maintaining the stability of feed supply, especially during periods of declining forage production in the dry season.

“There are currently 843 feed bank units across 34 provinces. They are intended to produce longer-lasting livestock forage, either in fermented form as silage or in dried form as hay,” Suganda said in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, on Friday.

He explained that strengthening the feed banks involves encouraging farmers to process forage into preserved feed which can be stored for longer periods. The effort is conducted to ensure its availability when feed demand increases or grass supplies decline.

“The management of feed banks is also aimed at strengthening the resilience of livestock farming businesses so that they are less affected by fluctuations in feed availability caused by changes in climate and seasonal conditions,” he explained.

In addition to serving as feed reserves, he expressed hope the feed banks would strengthen the capacity of livestock farmer groups to manage feed resources more independently and sustainable in their respective regions.

The Ministry of Agriculture also promotes the integration of feed banks with the cultivation of drought-tolerant forage crops and animal health services to help maintain stable livestock productivity.

“These efforts are part of the government’s strategy to strengthen the national livestock subsector resilience through a better-managed and more adaptive feed supply system at the regional level,” Suganda said.
