New framework covers energy, trade, and national currency settlements
Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed on a 2026–2030 strategic partnership plan following a summit in Kazan on June 17–18 marking 35 years of relations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described ASEAN as an increasingly influential organisation and said cooperation is based on sovereignty, international law, mutual respect, and equality among partners.
Trade, energy and payments cooperation expanded
Russia said it aims to expand exports of energy resources, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and food products to ASEAN markets.
The framework also promotes greater use of national currencies in bilateral trade settlements, alongside cooperation in energy security and civilian nuclear projects.
2026-2030 strategic framework adopted
The summit adopted the Kazan Declaration and a Russia–ASEAN strategic partnership action plan covering 2026-2030.
The plan outlines cooperation in energy, transport, technology, food security, artificial intelligence, tourism, and cultural exchange.
On the sidelines, Putin held bilateral meetings with ASEAN leaders covering trade, investment, travel, and currency settlement arrangements.
